So, let’s chat about Amazon. You’ve likely heard Amazon is suing writers of fake reviews. I assume this applies to reviewers of all Amazon products and not just books—an approach Fortune Magazine likens to “killing an ant with a sledgehammer.”

Frankly, I’m confused why Amazon is targeting reviewers but not vendors who solicit the phony feedback. Sham reviewers aren’t the only ones guilty of “undermining customer trust on Amazon.” The seller who shells out $5 for that fake review is just as culpable.

Another recent occurrence affecting Amazon reviews—book reviews specifically—is the October 15 passing of Harriet Klausner. Ms. Klausner, a speed reader and former librarian, reviewed tens of thousands of books on Amazon. As far as I know, she never gave a book less than four stars, which means writers adored her. Whether or not you believe Klausner read all the books she claimed to have read is irrelevant. Her loss will be felt by Amazon authors far and wide.

Several years ago, I deleted my reviews from Amazon because I felt their system was corrupt. Given recent developments, I wonder if it’s possible for Amazon to clean up their review process this late in the game. I also question their claim that “the vast majority of reviews on Amazon are authentic, helping millions of customers make informed buying decisions.”

Thoughts? Do you trust Amazon reviews, not just book reviews, but for other products as well?
What would you suggest Amazon do to enhance the integrity of their review process?
